The Flo by Moen smart plumbing leak defense system is a comprehensive water monitoring whole house water leak detection system with proactive automatic water shut off valve in 3/4″, 1″ (same as 3/4″ valve with 1″ outer fittings), or 1¼”, for indoor or outdoor use.  It installs on the property’s main water supply line after back-flow or pressure regulators, and uses 2 internal sensors that actively monitor water flow, pressure and an external sensor for ambient temperature. Through its nightly or custom scheduled pressure-based Health Tests, Flo’s Microleak™ technology is capable of detecting minor leaks such as small drips.

Using its smartphone app or online dashboard, Flo provides you the ability to see live water use, flow rates, historical usage, temperature and water pressure, and to control your water remotely.  It monitors flow in two main modes; the “Home” and “Away” modes, but you can also put it in “Sleep” mode for times when you need to use extended periods of water without need for alarms such as filling a pool or washing the car.  Through machine learning, the Home and Away modes are set by the system after roughly the first week of installation and water use.  During that initial period, the Flo system monitors water flow and usage patterns to identify your water use needs, and sets itself to accommodate known typical usage.  These settings may change over time as the system identifies changes in your water use patterns and habits.

The Away mode setting should be used while the home is vacant so that the system responds faster to any unusual flow to protect you from catastrophic water damage.  In either mode, if water flows uninterrupted for a period of time longer than your settings, the shutoff valve is activated and push, text, email and phone call alerts are sent to warn you that the water will be shut off.  To turn the water on or off during a power outage, (or in case of other emergencies), you can use simply use the hex key and green manual knob on the top of the Flo device to open or close the valve.

For additional protection options, you can add an unlimited quantity of water detector sensor accessories to the app and place them on the floor or in vanity cabinets near sinks and other appliances for notification of leaks on the floor.  These sensors can be used alone as a sensor based notification-only system, or they can be set to trigger water shut off the Flo By Moen valve if you also have that installed on the incoming cold water main line.  There is also an optional sensing cable for the floor sensors if desired.
